The North Face Grid Print

This grid design for newspaper and direct mail was to designed to be both flexible and useful. Each store's materials had a different grid arrangement, photography, and information. To help the customer get to the sales, store maps were included. The North Face store cartography has a rich and exciting history. Early attempts at store maps were severely limited by lack of knowledge of anything other than very local features. In Palo Alto, geometry was used from very early times to help measure land. The annual flooding by the bay meant that without such measurements it was impossible to reconstruct the boundaries that had existed before the flood. They likely didn't give a shit though.
