A Wintery Visit to Dallas
While our worldly possessions were in transit, J and I visited my family in Dallas. Despite it being March, winter weather came in two waves starting with snow the day after we arrived.
The roads were a traffic-filled mess of trucks in ditches, cars sliding down onramps, and car crashes. The local meteorologists could barely contain their smiles, and for the day the only news was weather news.
My father was out on those roads somewhere, slowly working his way to us from Midland, Texas.
When everyone was reunited, we popped some logs in the fireplace, played some RISK, and patted the wide assortment of moody cats.

For the rest of the visit, the weather was mostly rain. On our scheduled day of departure to Nashville, it was snowing again.
At boarding time, our flight was cancelled due to over-reactive forecasting at the destination airport. We waited in two long lines and were rebooked on a flight for the next morning.
But by dawn, the roads were apocalyptic and we could only make it halfway up the hill out of the neighborhood before losing traction. We missed our flight, only to watch most of the snow melt away by the afternoon.
Our new flight was on Friday, and I was excited for another few hours of family, home-cooked food and satisfying cat pats.
