Three Weird Shanghai Things

Failing Sign

The “O R GY” across the street.

Looking out our apartment window, we can see a section of buildings across the street. Many of them have garish neon signs blinking all night. One business called “YOUR GYM” has some unfortunate problems with its sign. The letters Y, U, and M are on the fritz, so it reads “O R GY”. And judging by the buff body builder, it’s a total sausagefest.

Printing Error

A certain Problem has Occurred.

Printing out certain documents at work produce this vague and oddly capitalized error in the print monitor. And even though a certain problem has occurred, the file prints out just fine.

Stuffed Animals of the Night

Stuffed animals at night.

Last night, I was biking home along a fairly barren street. It was quiet except for the banshee squeak of a lady pushing a cart overflowing with vibrantly colored stuffed animals. Was she coming or going? How far was she pushing that noisy cart? Did she have to do this every day? What happens when it rains? It’s surprising how many questions arise when you see stuffed animals at night.

Nik:

Thanks, Anne. I LOL’ed when I saw that. Somehow the sign is working normally again.

JSB:

The Orgy sign reminds me of a lone neon sign glowing in the night on the side of a hotel/bar as I sped down an Albertan highway years back. It read “OLD BEER” in large bright letters. The “C” was out.

Nik:

I love inadvertently funny signs. There’s plenty of mistranslated signs in China too, but I didn’t take photos of many.
